The Rental Process for Costume Professionals at Ian Drummond Collection Inc. Costume House

As many of you know, Ian Drummond Collection is a well respected costume rental house servicing the film industry, comprising of a vast collection of 20th century vintage clothing, shoes and accessories for men, women and children. It has been servicing film, TV and other media productions since 1997 and is a go-to resource for costume designers, buyers and coordinators in the North America and abroad. Many of Ian's purchases end up for sale rather than being kept for the collection, or they might end up eventually decommissioned/retired from the collection and put on sale. Those items can be purchased by costumers and the public alike. You can find them at our studio, in our Etsy shop and on this website! However, renting is our main business. Below is a breakdown of the rentals process at our studio for anyone curious as to what that might be like and what to expect.

Initial contact

Contact us via email (iandrummondcollection@bellnet.ca) or phone (416.531.2591) to inquire if we would be able to accommodate the production's needs regarding time period, volume and type of clothing etc. Ian or another staff member will be able to advise.

Paperwork

Download and fill out the paperwork required to rent from us so that we can get started. The paperwork can be found on the ‘rent from us’ section of our main website iandrummondcollection.com. There are different types of paperwork based on the type of production and location. A security deposit is also required (the amount is indicated on the paperwork). However, those signing the ‘Commercial/Styling’ paperwork only need a credit card number.

Out of Province/International Rentals

If the production is out of province or country and you or a team member cannot come to the studio to pull costumes, you can send us your mood boards and requirements remotely and we will pull items for you at a cost. Our staff have expertise in period clothing, fashion history and film requirements, with Ian himself having worked in the industry for many years. Our pull will be photographed and sent to you via Dropbox to sign off on. Once we have approval, we will ship your items to you using FedEx or your preferred shipping broker. These items will be sent out on a 7 working day SPEC approval so that you can send back any items that don’t work.

Local/GTA Rentals

You can book time to come to the studio to view our whole stock and pull for yourself. We will point you in the right direction. We also have a full reference library for you to use while you’re here to compliment your search. The library consists of books, magazines, catalogues and fabric swatch books. You may also consult with Ian on your choices if needed. Once your selection is complete, we will begin writing everything up and getting it ready to hand over to you. Our local SPEC policy is 48 hours at 30%.

Camera

Our collection is a working collection and not a museum archive and thus, we understand that our stock may endure some wear and tear during production, but we expect that adequate care will be taken and any changes or adjustments must be approved by Ian beforehand. The condition of the garment is noted on the garment’s label and on our inventory system before going out. If we have missed something, please let us know when you first notice it.

Returns

Once production has wrapped, there is a standard requirement to dry clean our stock before sending it back to us in the same condition it went out. Any alterations made during the production must be brought back to their original measurements. Any missing items must be replaced or paid for in consultation with Ian. Once everything has been returned, paid for and settled, we will send back the security deposit.

Release

We love to see our items worn on screen and really appreciate being tagged on social media where our stock is seen! We try to follow the Instagram accounts of the professionals and production who work with us and will always tag them in our posts when we showcase our items which have used on screen.
