1920s Paper Lace Valentines, Set of 2

1920s Paper Lace Valentines, Set of 2

So many questions! There's a tiny cherub driving her very own automobile, a wee gal sharing having an ice cream date with her teddy bear on one card, and a couple of young lovebirds looking a little bit regency on a card with a distinctly arts and crafts or nouveau border. The answer? Maybe you'd better just use all the pretty things to make sure your love shows true!

Two cards, here, both in the Esther Howland style. An American admirer of Victorian paper lace valentines, she created a huge demand for these beauties in the mid 1800s. One card has no label, is rectangular, single-sided, and is unsigned. It has a mix of styles, but appears to date from the 1920s. It features a base card with a folksy floral/nouveau border, a white die-cut doily overlay, with a color illustration of two children in vaguely regency garb, and three cut-out color illustrations of a pink flower, two red hearts bound with purple ribbon, and a third heart that states "To One I Love". This card is uninscribed, never used.

The Second card is square, and folds open to reveal the greeting. It's got a fairly traditional elaborate border, embossed, colorful, and with poppies, daisies, daffodils and more. It also has a cream doily overlay, with two paper images affixed - a child in a red hat and a naked winged cherub driving a red automobile. A third image peeks through the doily of a child in yellow, seated at a cafe table eating ice cream with her teddy bear. There's a poem inside, as well as a black and white illustration, and it's inscribed in pencil.
