1920s Honeycomb Pop Up Valentine

1920s Honeycomb Pop Up Valentine

Watch out for the fiddler, even if they look like an angel! They'll write you a poem, send their younger brother over with flowers while you're minding your own business, and, boom! You're in love!

This lovely Valentine's card isn't dated, but it is very similar to cards made by the Beistle Company out of Pittsburgh, and likely dates from the late 1920s, early 30s. It's quite large, features a glorious paper puff/honeycomb, and is meant to stand alone. There is a colorful and sturdy, illustrated folksy floral background; a young lady in a dutch cap busy making a flower wreath; a cupid sneaking up with yet another wreath, a tiny little love poem, and a winged cupid bowing a tune on a big red heart. Bonus: it's not inscribed!

The poem reads:
To my Valentine
When the star of evening shineth,
In the purple twilight skies,
I recall the gleam responsive,
In the starlight of thine eyes.

COLOR: Caramel brown honeycomb, blue, rust, pink, red, yellow. The colors are a little more autumn-oriented than many valentines of this period, which makes a nice change.

MATERIAL: Tissue paper, cardboard, paper, glue.

MEASUREMENTS:
Height: 10 in. (25.4 cm)
Width (widest, folded flat): 9 in. (22.9 cm)

CONDITION: The tissue is somewhat rumpled on the outer side edges, but this is not really apparent when it's open. There are a couple of spots where the tissues may have come unglued at the edge, but they could be re-attached. There are no tears, stains or other problems with the tissue.
The back card has a half inch tear on the left hand side, about halfway down, but this is not too visible when viewed from the front. It also has a half inch tear about two inches from the bottom right. There is also a staple mark on the right hand side, opposite the left hand tear.
The girl and the fiddler both have a couple of light creases, and the third figure and the poem appear to be un-damaged.
None of this damage is particularly noticeable, however, and it's still in quite wonderful shape!
